ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A driver was killed and three others were hurt when one crash caused another late Sunday night in southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police said a sedan was traveling southbound on I-285 just south of the Campbellton Road exit when it left the roadway at approximately 9 p.m.

The vehicle struck the right guardrail, slid back onto the highway and was struck by a pickup truck. The sedan caught fire as a result of the impact.

A tractor trailer trying to avoid the accident went off the road into a ditch.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger in that car was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The drivers of the pickup truck and the tractor trailer were taken to area hospitals in stable condition.

The accident shut down all southbound lanes of I-285 for several hours overnight but all lanes have since reopened.

APD said the incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
