UGA police release sketch of attempted rape, aggravated assault suspect

Posted: Updated:

On Friday at about 4:20 in the afternoon, a woman was reported to have been attacked at knifepoint by a man attempting to rape her.

Police said the victim was able to flee to a safe location and was not injured during the incident.

The attempted rape happened at the State Botanical Gardens on South Milledge Avenue, a place that many people visit on a daily basis.

"I was definitely so surprised because I have been there so many times, and it is such a nice place and you would never assume that would be a place that would be a problem," Molly Kirksey, a junior at the University of Georgia, said. "I run with one headphone in my ear, instead of both ears so I try to be a little more aware, but I probably should improve my safety means when I am by myself."

Police said the perpetrator was described as 5'10" to 6' in height, weighing approximately 150 to 170 pounds with short sandy blonde hair.  He also was described as having crooked teeth and possibly having two small moles on the lower left side of his face.

"It is kind of a scary thought to think you could be going to your car and be abducted or raped," Alexis Steinhart, a senior, said. "It makes you feel really vulnerable all the time. You expect things to happen when you are around drinking and drugs. You don't really think it will happen in the middle of broad daylight so it is definitely a lot scarier, because it's a lot more unexpected."

Anyone with information is urged to contact the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200.
