DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a car while attempting to cross a DeKalb County road.

Moses Moore was trying to cross Panola Road at Panola Downs Road around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Police said Moore was in a crosswalk near his school, Panola Way Elementary School, at the time of the accident, but the driver had a green light to proceed through the intersection.

Accident eyewitnesses said Moore darted out into the street.

News of the accident spread quickly though Moses' school and to his neighbors.

Cievonn Young knows Moses, who is friends with her son.

"It just hurt so bad, he's like a son to me," Young said. "He was at my house almost every day."

Young's son took the news of the accident very hard as well.

"He's not doing well, he's like a best friend to him, so I just took him out of school," Young said.

The driver who hit Moses had not been charged as of Tuesday evening, but police were still investigating the accident.

Moses was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston where police said he is in very critical condition.

Police have not released any other information.

CBS Atlanta News has a crew at the scene and CBSAtlanta.com will have more information as it becomes available.
