Atlanta police officer foils prison smuggling operation

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

An Atlanta police officer on routine patrol Tuesday foiled an apparent smuggling operation into the United States Penitentiary.

Police said the officer noticed a white Oldsmobile Alero parked along the curb next to the prison fence on New Town Circle in southeast Atlanta.

The officer said he saw four men wearing gray sweatpants and shirts, black ski masks and black gloves who appeared to be smuggling items into the prison through the fence.

When the officer shined his spotlight on the vehicle, police said the men ran.

Three of the men scaled the fence back onto prison property.

The fourth man left the scene in the Alero. The vehicle was quickly abandoned nearby and the driver of the vehicle ran and was not located.

Officers recovered the vehicle, along with 24 cell phones, four 30 packs of light beer, three cases of whiskey, multiple bags of protein powder and two handguns loaded with hollow-point ammunition.

The FBI is investigating in conjunction with U.S. Bureau of Prisons investigators and officials.
