Severely injured hero dog inspires others with recovery
ATHENS, GA (CBS46) -
The Superman "S" on Kali's bandages is well deserved and earned.
"She's the one that's doing it. She's the one who's coming alive with the good team here (UGA) and everyone believing in her and fighting for her," said Kim Hayes with Clermont Veterinary Hospital.
Kali is a 4-year-old chocolate lab. She is recovering from major surgery to cover exposed tissue in her back and sides.
"We actually removed bones from the tail and moved that skin over her back. We used the leg folds to come up from the side," said Dr. Chad Schmiedt, soft tissue surgeon at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
CBS Atlanta first saw Kali two weeks ago. The pooch was injured when her shed caught on fire. She alerted her elderly owner and was credited with saving him and his house. Her owner rushed her to Dr. Linda Ingle who runs the Clermont Veterinary Hospital.
Kali suffered severe burns over 50 percent of her body. Ingle said most animals do not survive, but Kali was a fighter.
"She's eager to be here and she deserves that," said Ingle.
When Kali's health took a turn for the worse, Ingle rushed her to the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. The staff put in a feeding tube and then performed a five-hour surgery to cover her wounds. Her recovery has surprised everyone.
"For me it's the following she has, the dedication of her veterinarian and everybody here and just her personality and her ability to go through so much and still be a great dog," said Schmiedt.
To save Kali, her elderly owner had to give her up. He could not afford to pay for her treatment or handle the special care she'll need. So, Kali has adopted a new owner - Kim Hayes, who has taken care of her from the beginning and will eventually bring her home.
Schmiedt said Kali will need another surgery in a couple of weeks. Her care is expected to cost upwards of $10,000.
Ingle's office is accepting donations. Their address is Clermont Veterinary Hospital, 5243 Cleveland Hwy., Clermont, GA 30527. You can also email Kalisfund@yahoo.com or call 770-983-7851.
