10 people displaced by house fire in Southwest Atlanta

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A house fire on Cascade Avenue forced 10 people to flee just after midnight as the smoke and flames consumed most of the building. Atlanta firefighters responded just after 12:30 to put out the fire, but the house was already a total loss.

A spokeswoman for the Atlanta Fire Department said it will likely be at least 48 hours before they can determine what sparked the flames.

"It started in the back bedroom," said Calandas Walker, one of the 10 people inside who made it out safely. "There was an empty room, and I don't know what happened, but when I woke up, the smoke alarm went off. I said, 'Get up, get up, the house is on fire. Get up, the house is on fire.' And if I hadn't gotten up, I think there would have been some fatalities, somebody would have died."

The Red Cross assisted the displaced residents by helping them find lodging for three nights while they worked on finding more permanent housing.
