National media continues to focus on Sandy Hook children

Posted: Updated:

The children of Newtown, CT, have been under the national spotlight since the deadly shooting which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary in December.

Some recently sang at the Super Bowl, and some will participate in a Grammy pre-show this weekend.

But is all the exposure at such a young age a good thing?

The director of the Newtown Children's Chorus that recorded Somewhere Over the Rainbow to raise money for a local youth organization said anything that helps is okay.

But others think it might be time to back off.

"Has the media come to the point where it now is the word Newtown is a news item and it allows you to go to the front of the page and get the recognition," said Ridgewood, CT, First Selectman Rudy Marconi. "I think we all have to do some soul searching, Hollywood, the news media."

One father of a Sandy Hook student said keeping the town and its children in the spotlight helps people to not forget the tragedy. But he also said he knew there's a fine line between making a statement and exploiting the kids.
