Cobb County police break up burglary ring

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Police arrested four people in a string of brazen home and car burglaries in Cobb County and beyond. Thousands of dollars worth of goods were stolen from roughly 30 homes.

Police call them crimes of opportunity.  There were no broken windows and no forced entry in any of the cases.  Lynn Keenum left his garage door open.

"The door beeps and my wife says, 'Someone's in the kitchen.' The next thing you know, we can see a flashlight in the house," Keenum said.

It took only seconds for Keenum to jump out of bed and spring into action.

"I yelled to get out of the house. They didn't leave and only when I came down the hall racking my gun shell in the chamber did they decide to leave," Keenum said.

Thieves stole his laptop and took a gun from inside his unlocked truck.

"East Cobb is known to be an affluent area and the thieves went where money and valuable were, simple as that," Cobb County police Lt. Destiny Davidson said.

Police arrested Jontavius Clark, 26, of Austell; Malloy Brooks, 48, of Atlanta; Jaquori Harris, 20, of College Park; and Richard Burgess, 64, of Atlanta. Police said the four are acquaintances.

"The majority of the items we've recovered are high-dollar purses, like your Gucci purses and that sort of thing. High-dollar sunglasses and some credit and debit cards," Davidson said.

Keenum was glad the crew was stopped before the crimes escalated.

"It's a shame you feel it's OK to go in someone's home and steal from them and the same time you could possibly get killed. Would you want to risk your life for a laptop, really?" Keenum asked.

Police are trying to match the items recovered with its owners.
