Atlanta Catholics react to Pope Benedict XVI resignation

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta Catholics shared the same sense of shock that Catholics across the world felt as they learned that Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down.

At the daily mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta's Buckhead community, some parishioners seemed at peace with the announcement.

"I think he's done wonders, and I think he's very smart," said one parishioner. "If he feels that he's not capable of doing his rigid schedule, then he should leave."

Father Frank McNemee said he learned of the surprise announcement early Monday morning through a phone call from a friend.

"And I said, ‘Are you serious?' And he said, ‘Yes, it's just been on the news,'" said McNemee.

McNemee said he's encouraging his parishioners to pray for the church, to pray for the College of Cardinals, which will elect the new pope, and to pray for Pope Benedict.

"He's a man of truth," said McNemee. "He is a man of tremendous wisdom and insight, and at the end of the day, I believe that Pope Benedict is doing what is good for the church."
