Day one for DeKalb County's interim school superintendent

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

Former labor commissioner Michael Thurmond spent his first full day on the job as DeKalb County's new interim school superintendent Monday.

The board named Thurmond to the post Friday after superintendent Cheryl Atkinson announced she was leaving the district.

The district's accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), put the school system on probation. A SACS investigation found the school board mismanaged millions of dollars, abused its power and showed a lack of leadership.

"Hopefully, he (Thurmond) can restore hope in the school system," said David Schutten, president of the Organization of DeKalb Educators.  "Morale is very low among the staff.  I think there's a lack of trust."

A spokesman for DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis said Ellis has already talked to Thurmond about the direction the school district will take.

"The larger issue is not who's the superintendent of the DeKalb County school board," said spokesman Burke Brennan.  "It's what the school system is doing to make sure that we're in line and we get reaccredited by SACS and we get back on the right foot."

The school board will meet Monday afternoon in executive session to discuss legal issues.  A full board meeting will be held Monday at 6 p.m.
