Report: Officer fires shot during Smyrna traffic stop

SMYRNA, GA (CBS46) -

A 24-year-old is facing aggravated assault with intent to murder charges after a chase with a Smyrna officer.

Kevin Shymel Gibbs, 24, was pulled over for a traffic offense on Tuesday.

During the incident he attempted to run down an officer, according to the Smyrna Police Department.

Police said there was a short chase between Gibbs and the officer along Park Road.

Gibbs crashed into several cars before crashing his car at the intersection of Spring Road and Glenroy Drive, according to reports.

The officer fired a shot during the incident around 5:30 p.m., according to Smyrna Public Information Officer Michael Smith.

Gibbs was shot and taken to the hospital.

The officer was not injured. He was placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an internal investigation.
