GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Gwinnett County School police resource officer directing traffic at Lanier High School was struck by a car on Wednesday.

Officer Rolando Jimenez, an 11-year veteran, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Charges are pending against Sydney Smigiel who struck Jimenez.

Jimenez was directing traffic at Lanier High School and signaled for the southbound traffic to stop.

According to reports, Smigiel failed to obey Jimenez's direction to stop and struck him as the other cars were turning left.

Jimenez was airborn and landed in the left turn lane for the high school, according to reports.

Smigiel then struck a vehicle turning left head on and pushed that vehicle onto Jimenez, according to witnesses.

Smigiel is facing charges for failing to obey the officers traffic directions.

The second vehicle was driven by a 17-year-old student of Lanier High School.

Jimenez is the Lanier Cluster SRO and he's served the school district since 2001.
