Cobb County officer injured while responding to fatal crash

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Cobb County police officer was injured while responding to a fatal accident on the East-West Connector in the Smyrna area.

The initial fatal, single-vehicle crash happened Wednesday morning on the East-West Connector at Fontaine Road. The driver of the car drove off the road and crashed into the wood line, police said.

As the Cobb County police officer, who was riding a motorcycle, was headed to back up a fellow officer at that scene, a car turned into an intersection near Walmart, and the officer couldn't stop in time.

As a result, he had to lay the bike down to avoid hitting the car, and broke his leg in the process.

The driver of the car who pulled into the intersection was not at fault.

The officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated.
