Cause of fatal southwest Atlanta fire determined

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Fire Investigators have determined the cause of a fatal fire in southwest Atlanta.

It happened on Campbellton Road on Friday night.

Firefighters said 20-year-old Scarri McNeil was asleep inside at the time and never made it out.

The cause was an electrical issue, according to reports.

Some of residents witnessed firefighters pull McNeil's body out and try to resuscitate him in the front yard, but in the end those efforts fell short.

The fire ripped through the home, leaving behind a huge hole in the roof and a charred mess. Neighbors said it's a major tragedy that caught them all off guard.

Willie Walker lives behind the house that burned. "It's real close to home. To be able to step out your back door and see that kind of event was sort of sad," said Walker.

And it already has some, doing things a little differently.

"It's going to make me be a little safer. I burn my fireplace quite a bit so I'll be safer and more cautious about what I do," said Walker.

Meanwhile the victim's parents, who also lived in the house but weren't hurt, now have to make the biggest adjustment of all, carrying on without their son.
