The original monument commemorating the Battle of Iwo Jima is up for auction at a New York City auction house.
It's the centerpiece of an upcoming auction of World War II relics and objects, including battle flags from the USS Arizona and the USS Enterprise.
Bonhams Auctioneers is marking the 65th anniversary of the U.S. invasion in February 1945. The Pacific Theater auction features the original Iwo Jima statue that depicts the raising of the Stars and Stripes on Mount Suribachi by five Marines and a Navy corpsman.
A photograph of the moment by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal won a Pulitzer Prize, and later provided the inspiration for the monument, designed by Felix de Weldon.
The auction is set for Friday, Feb. 22.
