Judge sets $10,000 bond for cop, former deputy and civilian accused in cocaine payoffs

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Three men, all from different backgrounds, sat in their orange prison jumpsuits waiting to hear the words from federal court Judge Alan Baverman, that their bonds would be granted.

Baverman set conditions and gave each man a $10,000 bail.

The men are former DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy Monyette McLaurin, current DeKalb County police Officer Dorian Williams, and a civilian Gregory Lee Harvey.

An indictment in federal court states that McLaurin and Harvey worked together to protect drug dealers during cocaine transactions. In return for their protection, the men were given thousands of dollars in payouts.

All three were arrested on Tuesday, Feb. 12 after a more than yearlong investigation by federal agents.

Investigators said the men were set up by a confidential informant after they were given up to authorities as being corrupt cops on the take. In all of the transactions, according to prosecutors, the men were videotaped and had their audio recorded as they protected what they thought was real cocaine.

McLaurin and Williams were two of the defendants listed in the indictments that made violent remarks about how far they were willing to go to protect the drug deals from rival gangs or other officers who might catch them in the act.

Williams, according to his indictment, stated if a deal went bad, "I gotta (expletive) kill him, I can't just shoot him."

According to McLaurin's indictment he made similar comments and, "Volunteered that if given a signal, he would be willing to shoot the buyer if necessary."

Once the men meet the conditions of their release they will be placed on ankle monitoring devices.

Last Tuesday, 15 people were arrested in what U.S. District Attorney Sally Yates said is the largest corruption arrest involving law enforcement officers in metro Atlanta's history.

Yates said DeKalb County police officers Dennis Duren and Dorian Williams, Forest Park police sergeants Victor Middlebrook and Andrew Monroe, Atlanta police Officer Kelvin Allen, Stone Mountain police Officer Denoris Carter, MARTA police Officer Marquez Holmes, former DeKalb County Sheriff's Office jail officers Monyette McLaurin and Chase Valentine and Federal Protection Services contract Officer Sharon Peters were arrested Tuesday.
