Police: Fake lawyer scammed Fulton County couple

Posted: Updated:

Investigators arrested a man who allegedly claimed to be an attorney in Fulton County.

Kerwin and Virginia Davis filed a report after they paid Arkeith Nelson $5,275 to help them with a child support case.

They later discovered that Nelson was not licensed to practice law in Georgia.

"It has been very difficult because we feel betrayed," Virginia Davis said.

Nelson told the Davis family he could resolve their problems and that he totally understood their situation.

Nelson agreed to be in court, but he never went to the hearing.

"We trusted him to be an attorney. He said he was an advocate for child support and everything he explained to us. He said he was one of the best and excellent at what he do," Kerwin Davis said.

The couple said everything looked legit from Nelson's knowledge of law to his plush office on the 32nd floor of 191 Peachtree Tower, which is right next door to the Ritz-Carlton.

The couple soon grew suspicious after Kerwin's license came up suspended.

"I had called child support to ask why was my license suspended and then they told me I had a warrant," said Kerwin Davis.

As a result, a judge issued an arrest warrant for Nelson.

He was booked into the Fulton County Jail Wednesday night.

He is charged with four counts of theft by deception and one count of unauthorized practice of law.

His next court appearance will be on March 7.
