Injured Holly Springs officer’s wife makes first public appearance

Posted: Updated:

During a fundraiser at a Marietta restaurant, the Holly Springs couple spent part of Sunday afternoon hugging and shaking hands with family, friends and supporters.

Three months ago, Shane Ladner and his wife Meg were injured during a parade in Midland, TX.

The fundraiser in their honor was held at the Cherokee Cattle Company restaurant in Marietta.

Meg Ladner entered the room with a smile as bright as Sunday's sunshine for her first public appearance since leaving the hospital over the weekend.

"I spent 16 days in a comma. I had no idea this was a story. Now people are coming out and wishing me well," said Meg Ladner.

During the Nov. 15, 2012 parade float accident, she shattered her pelvis and lost her left leg.

"I have a strength that I get from my faith, my family and friends. I've been holding on to that," said Meg Ladner.

She was on that float right beside her husband, Shane Ladner, who was also injured.

But even with a bad back, Shane Ladner has continued to stand at his new post by his wife's side.

He told CBS Atlanta News he is proud of how far she has come.

She told CBS Atlanta News her girlfriends told her Shane Ladner should get the husband of the year award. She told CBS Atlanta News he deserves much more.

"He should have the husband of the decade award really because he's been there every step of the way. He hasn't left my side. It's just incredible," said Meg Ladner.

Meg Ladner was released from the hospital on Friday, several months earlier than her doctors expected.

She told CBS Atlanta News doctors initially thought she would be there six to 12 months.

The couple had to move into an apartment in Canton to help accommodate her.

Now they're faced with two house notes until they can sell their Holly Springs home.

To help out, friends are holding another fundraiser on Wednesday at Buckhead Club in Buckhead from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
