ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A Grady High School student accidentally shot herself in the thigh in the school's courtyard on Wednesday morning around 9:45 a.m.

Morgan Tukes, 17, told the school resource officer what happened and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. She was alert, conscious and breathing.

The pink .380-caliber handgungun was confiscated by school police.

"The school immediately moved into crisis management mode, alerting parents and working hand in hand with the APD. Parents were contacted via phone call, text and email, twice, within one hour of the incident," said a spokesperson for APS in a statement.

The school does have metal detectors and does check student's backpacks.

Tukes is charged with carrying weapons within a school safety zone, reckless conduct, possesion of a pistol by a minor, and disruption of a public school.
