Clayton Co. wants to make a play for the new Falcons stadium

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Clayton County wants to make a play for the new Falcons stadium - that's if talks fall through with the city of Atlanta.

The land is just east of Hartsfield Jackson International Airport near Conley Road and Old Dixie Hwy.

"Let's start thinking about it and if the deal falls through in the city of Atlanta, then let's make a pitch,"Clayton County Commission Chairman Jeff Turner said.

Turner calls the 150 acres a prime location.

"We support the Falcons and we want to see them do well and we want to see them in a new stadium, so why not have that stadium in Clayton County?" Turner said.

Grant Wainscott of Clayton County's economic development office said years of planning went into making the land development ready.

"This is inside the perimeter with I-75 as one boundary, I-285 the other boundary and a $50 million new road network that's about to be broken ground on next year. So the water, sewer, power infrastructure is here for a large scale user," Wainscott said.

Wainscott thinks making use of this land will benefit the metro area, whether it's by the Falcons or someone else.

"This is really the last great developable piece inside the perimeter. It's got an Atlanta address, Atlanta zip code which is going to be key for any user in this area," Wainscott said.

The Falcons have made it clear. They don't want to repair the Georgia Dome. They want a new stadium and the team wants to keep the stadium in downtown Atlanta. But the City Council first has to approve the multi-million to billion dollar public-private partnership. Talks are on-going.

"The city of Atlanta wants the Falcons, and they probably are going to be able to work it out but if they fail to work it out, Clayton County stands ready," Turner said.

Turner said the county has not approached the Falcons about this.

A representative for the Falcons said they are not familiar with the land, and continue to focus on keeping the Falcons in downtown Atlanta.
