Governor calls for DeKalb County School Board candidates

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Gov. Nathan Deal issued a call for candidates to apply for six open positions on the DeKalb County School Board.

On Monday, the governor announced he was removing six current members who are under fire for mismanaging the district.

A federal judge is scheduled to hold a hearing on the legality of the removal on Friday.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) put the district on probation last December for a lack of leadership, abuse of power and money mismanagement.

While the legal battle is not settled yet, many said it is time for the district to move forward with selecting new board members.

"This is to make sure that in the event that an individual is removed, there's somebody ready to go, ready to get to work," said State Rep. Scott Holcomb, D-Atlanta. "So we don't lose any more time and we can keep our eye on the prize which is to make sure that we come off of probationary status at the end of this year."

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) put the district on probation last December for a lack of leadership, abuse of power and money mismanagement.

Candidates have until March 6 at 5 p.m. to submit their applications.

In the meantime, Holcomb has introduced a bill that would limit the legal fees the district could spend to defend board members. He estimated the district has spent more than $1 million on litigation just in recent weeks.

"The goal is to make sure we put as much money in the classroom as we can," said Holcomb. "Teachers haven't had raises in years and so it's really, if we're going to spend money on education, let's spend it on education not litigation."
