Fulton County hotel closed for violations, residents displaced

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Multiple Fulton County agencies shut down a local hotel for various health reasons on Friday.

Fulton County police, code enforcement agents and workers from health and human services evacuated The Extend-A-Lodge on Frederick Drive in southwest Atlanta.

County personnel told CBS Atlanta News the hotel was closed because its tourist accommodation permit has been revoked.

"There are rooms not fit for habitation, there are unsanitary conditions, we have a couple rooms that have mold and mildew," Fulton County code enforcement officer Wayne Wright said.

Residents living in the hotel are frustrated because most claim county officials provided no notice before forcing them to leave.

Karen Smith has lived in the hotel for over a year and is angry that neighbors didn't receive a warning from the county.

"This is so unfair," Smith said.

County officials passed out temporary housing vouchers for displaced residents.
