Battle over beer sales brewing at State Capitol

Posted: Updated:

A battle over beer sales is brewing at the State Capitol.

A new law could mean big changes when it comes to sales at both brew pubs and breweries.

Currently, brew pubs like 5 Season Brewing Company can sell all the beer they want as long as it stays in the pub, and for breweries just to sell packaged beer.

The new law would allow them to put it in glass jugs so people could take it home.  Supporters say it would be a good thing for not just the pubs, but for the whole state.

David Larkworthy, co-owner of 5 Season Brewing Company said, "We're one of the only people in world who manufacture a product that we can't sell to our customers."

Larkworthy said the law is not only hurting him, but one of Georgia's biggest money making industries, tourism.

"When you're not able to provide those tourists with some GA product to take with them, it really takes away from what this state has to offer a tourist," said Larkworthy.

He said the restrictions are also keeping the state from tapping into the micro brew industry, something that's booming nationwide.

"Here in the state of Georgia, a lot of breweries are staying away from investing in state, which is keeping jobs out of state of Georgia. It's keeping tax revenue down," said Larkworthy.

But opponents said a change would hurt the wholesale and retail industry and possibly destroy the state three-tier system designed to ensure fairness.

Larkworthy said 42 other states do it and it seems to be working fine.

Supporters already have more than 2,000 petitions in just a couple days.
