Kennesaw looking to crack down on dumpster divers

KENNESAW, GA (CBS46) -

Lawmakers in Kennesaw will consider a proposal that would make it illegal to go through another person's garbage.

The new law would fix a loophole to keep people from not just going through your trash, but your recycling as well.

Police said it happens all the time, and is becoming a real problem for both home owners and businesses.

Scrap metal is normally the main target, but police said scavengers are going after just about anything with value because of the tough economy.

Kennesaw Chief of Police Bill Westenberger said the new law could make a big difference and make things easier on his officers.

"Innocently enough you're just going through trash, but we don't know when we come up on scene, so if we've got the ability to mitigate the situation prior to having contact its always better," said Westenberger.

The public will have the chance to weigh in on the idea at Monday's city council meeting, starting at 6:30 p.m.
