Dog rescued, leg amputated

Posted: Updated:

Angels Among Us pet rescue saved a three-legged dog over the weekend.

The dog they named Merle is a pit bull mix. The rescue group saved him from euthanasia at the Fulton County Animal Shelter.

"I thought he suffered so much already he deserved a second chance," rescuer Melissa De Feis said.

De Feis couldn't bear the thought of dog being put down.

"As soon as I saw him with that missing leg, I knew that his death was imminent and he was going to be put down, and I knew I wanted to save him," De Feis said.

She named the dog Merle and brought him to Georgia Veterinary Specialists.

"He's fairly emaciated. He hasn't been fed regularly in some time, but the injury itself is not so bad, being further down on the leg is better," veterinarian Alan Cross said.

Cross isn't sure how Merle lost his limb, but he'll amputate it and relieve some of his pain.

"Dogs don't have the same emotional attachment to the limbs. They don't have to worry about what the other dogs think," Cross said.

He expects Merle to make a full recovery.

"Most dogs bounce back from amputation within a couple of days, and within a couple weeks, they figure out how to walk on three and do fantastic," Cross said.

That's all De Feis could hope for.

"I just knew he'd suffered so much and thought he deserved a better life and a chance to heal and to live a happy life," De Feis said.

Merle already has a potential foster mom for when he recovers.  The surgery costs about $4,000. Angels Among Us is raising money to pay for it.
