JONESBORO, GA (CBS46) -

Clayton County police said a joint operation with the Clayton County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit led to the arrest of a violent gang member on Wednesday afternoon.

Police charged Michael Jordan, 23, with murder and gang charges in a March 3 shooting.

Maj. Johnny Robinson said the victim Stacy Johnson, 24, of Riverdale, and three friends were at a Quick Trip on Highway 138 in Jonesboro when Johnson, his friends and Jordon all began staring at each other.

"We believe the motive was gang-related," Robinson said. "They began staring at each other and no words were exchanged inside the Quik Trip."

Johnson and his friends then left the store and drove down Highway 138.

Robinson said Jordan followed Johnson for about a quarter mile and then fired upwards of seven shots at the car. Johnson, who was sitting in the back seat, was shot in the back of the head.

Johnson was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where police said he died either Monday or Tuesday.

While getting booked at the Clayton County Jail, Jordan said police arrested the wrong man.

But Robinson said they have the right person in custody.

"With the number of rounds, and as you say it is a busy highway, any bystanders could have been hit, and we are happy to have this subject off the street," Robinson said.

Quick Trip had surveillance video which helped to identify Jordan as a suspect.
