Georgia Aquarium shares photos of African penguin chicks

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

If you are a penguin lover you will be thrilled to hear about the Georgia Aquarium's new additions.

The Georgia Aquarium announced the birth of multiple African penguin chicks.

When penguin chicks hatch, they are roughly 70 grams, according to a Georgia Aquarium's veterinarian.

One of the chicks weighs in at 368 grams, and when grown, it will weigh 7-12 pounds and stand about 2 feet tall.

Many of the Georgia Aquarium's penguins are genetically valuable to the collection of African penguins in Association of Zoos and Aquariums institutions because they are not offspring of birds in the current population.

Kristen Hannigan, animal care and training specialist, is working on socialization time with 3-week-old penguin chicks.

The Georgia Aquarium's animal care and training team members will continue to hand-rear the animals behind-the-scenes.
