Abandoned Atlanta apartment complex demolished Monday

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

A vacant apartment complex in northwest Atlanta was torn down Monday.

La Barcelona on Anderson Avenue has been considered a long time community eyesore. One resident, who said he lived there 10 years ago, claims the complex has been vacant ever since then.

"I think a property like that represents abandonment, it represents a community that folks have turned their back on," said David Jernigan, the Executive Director at nearby KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School. "I think it sends a message to our kids that people aren't thinking about your community. So the fact that the city is taking action sends a very different message."

Atlanta Police Code Enforcement is working with Mayor Kasim Reed and the Atlanta City Council to clean up abandoned properties around the city that are breeding grounds for crime, and negatively affecting the quality of life for nearby residents.
