I-75 crash sends Fulton County sheriff's deputy to hospital

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A Fulton County sheriff's deputy was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital on Friday morning following a crash that snarled traffic in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near Moores Mill Road.

According to Fulton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan, the deputy was transported for precautionary reasons. A spokesman with Georgia State Patrol later said the deputy was not injured.

The accident happened while an inmate was being transported in a patrol car by the sheriff's office.

The GSP spokesman said the patrol car was in the HOV lane when it struck a vehicle on the right, causing that car to hit another vehicle. The patrol car then hit the right shoulder wall and re-entered traffic, hitting a fourth vehicle.

Flanagan said the inmate was injured and taken to Grady. It was not immediately clear how severe the inmate's injuries were.

While the three other drivers had complaints of injuries, only two were taken to Grady to get checked out.

The crash scene was cleared out by 8:30 a.m., roughly two hours after the collision.

GSP troopers are investigating what caused the accident to happen.
