Five years after tornado, cemetery lives on

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The 2008 tornado that ripped through Atlanta left so much damage at the historic Oakland Cemetery that Executive Director David Moore almost lost hope.

Almost.

"That day I didn't think we could recover. But we have," Moore said. "Today you can't really tell where the tornado came, but in our memories it's still very fresh."

Moore said it took two years, 70 dump trucks worth of debris, countless volunteer hours and $1 million for the cemetery to get back on its feet.

"We don't really want to forget it because it becomes a part of the history of this place," Moore said. "I don't think you can know who you are as a people unless you know where you came from."

Moore said restoration wouldn't be possible if it weren't for donations from the public. If you'd like to donate, visit the Oakland Cemetery site: http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/support.html
