ATHENS, GA (CBS46) -

A child was flown to an Atlanta hospital after being mauled by a pit bull. It happened at a home on Hidden Lake Drive in Clarke County around 12:54 p.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found an 8-year-old boy had been bitten a number of times. His injuries were severe enough that he was airlifted to Egleston Hospital.

Investigators said the child and his older brother were visiting a family friend's home.

Police said the children had been playing with the homeowner's dog. When the two boys began to wrestle, the dog suddenly got excited and bit the younger child multiple times, causing serious injuries, according to police.

The older boy was not injured during the attack.

Athens-Clarke County Animal Control has the dog.
