Another Carnival cruise ship limps back to port over the weekend

TAMPA, FL (CBS46/AP) -

The Carnival Legend started losing power last week because of propulsion problems, causing it to reduce its speed. Carnival Cruise Lines had to cancel the Legend's stop at the Grand Cayman Islands.

It made it safely back to port in Tampa, FL. Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen says Legend arrived about 7 a.m. Sunday, and passengers were off the ship by the normal debarkation time of 10:30 a.m.

No other problems were experienced, and passengers were not inconvenienced, according to Carnival, but it was the cruise line's fourth ship in five weeks to experience a mechanical issue at sea.

One of the most notable was the disaster aboard the Carnival Triumph. The ship lost power last month. Passengers had to endure days without power and overflowing toilets.

Passengers on the Legend were given a $100-a-person credit, a refund on the Grand Cayman port tax and half off a Carnival cruise taken within the next two years.

But that isn't enough for some passengers. Brandy Sumpter says, "Oh, I plan on contacting my lawyer, I plan on contacting the Better Business Bureau, I plan on writing plenty of complaints on their website."

And Sean Buchanan says the $100 credit is not nearly enough to cover all the expenses of the trip.

"We paid $3,500 for our suite and everything, and that's all they offered us. We only went to two of four ports. It was kind of a bummer that they weren't really taking care of us the way I thought they should,"says Buchanan.

Carnival stresses in a statement that the Legend's safety systems, steering and services onboard are functioning normally.
