Officer forced to shoot suspected shoplifter near Lilburn Family Dollar

LILBURN, GA (CBS46) -

Lilburn police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon near a Family Dollar on Lawrenceville Highway.

The shooting happened in the Lilburn Square shopping center, according to a Lilburn police spokeswoman.

Officers said the suspect resisted arrest and grabbed the officer's Taser.

"He pulled his Taser out, at which time the suspect grabbed the Taser and took possession of it and aimed it at the officer. At which time, the officer, fearing his life was in danger, fired two rounds at the suspect, using his duty weapon to protect himself," said Lilburn Police Chief Bruce Hedley.

The suspect is in the hospital in serious condition.Police have not released his name.
