Fatal car accident brings community together

Posted: Updated:

A tragic loss is bringing a Forsyth County community together like never before.

Peter Roberts, 17, was killed early Saturday morning after he ran off the road and hit a brick mailbox.

Liz Moore has been friends with Roberts since they were toddlers.

"It's surreal to lose somebody you're really close with and that you just saw two days before," said Moore.

Roberts was an active member of The Vine Community Church. A special service was put together less than a day after the accident, and hundreds of people showed up, including his family.

There was also a special tree set up for people to add little notes to each limb saying nice things about Roberts or condolences to his family.

"That tree is just one little resemblance of how much Peter was loved by this church and by the community. He'll be sorely missed," said Pastor John Adams.

And those who knew him best said he'll be missed for a number of different reasons.

"His heart and just his love that poured out of him is really what marked him," said Adams.

For Moore it was the lighter things that stood out most. "

"He always wore these crazy socks and stuff. He just doesn't care and I think that's why so many people felt a close connection with him," said Moore.

But even though the memory of his socks will always make Moore laugh, it's Roberts' smile that she might remember most.

"It sounds so cheesy but his teeth are like perfect. A-plus to his orthodontist."

She said it was a smile that showed just how happy the 17-year-old was.

"It's just so much happiness. I don't understand how one person can have that much happiness," said Moore.

She said he had so much happiness it rubbed off on others, and now it's become his legacy.

Moore said the tragedy has already brought a lot of people together who normally don't hang out and she expects even bigger crowds for Roberts' funeral on Wednesday.
