Investigators in Cherokee County said a 20-year-old driver left the scene of a hit-and-run accident because he was running late to his drug court graduation.

Victor Baruchman was arrested by police on Wednesday after he struck crossing guard Jerrold Reaid, 63, according to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.

Reaid was directing traffic at Liberty Elementary School in Canton on Tuesday afternoon.

After the incident, Baruchman sped away northbound on Bells Ferry Road, according to the incident report.

Reaid suffered a broken ankle. He was taken to Northside Cherokee Hospital.

He has worked as a crossing guard in Cherokee County for six years.

Baruchman is charged with felony hit-and-run. His bond has been set at $15,000.
