Jackson County High School helps Tripp Halstead's family

JEFFERSON, GA (CBS46) -

Football players with Jackson County Comprehensive High School teamed up with some local businesses in Jefferson to assist Tripp Halstead and his family as they prepare to move into their new home in the community.

Head Football Coach Benji Harrison rallied his troops to a winning season on the field this year.

And now the team is raising the bar off the field.

"If my nieces and nephews got injured the way Tripp did I would want people to help him out as well so I should also help him," student Ian McGaughey said.

"I like helping people out and this is a big opportunity for me and the football team to help people out," student Evan Breakspear said.

The Halstead's home will undergo renovations beginning Sunday to accommodate Tripp's needs. As a result, some members of the Jackson County football team have volunteered to help with construction and even raised money to give to the family.

"It's not going to be easy to help Tripp with his house renovation and it's not easy on the football field.  So you have to have the same mindset doing that, doing school work or whatever you do you have to have the mindset that we have to get it done and it's got to be done right," McGaughey said.

The school's touchdown club has also garnered support from Kroger, Publix, Dairy Queen and CVS in the community to provide food and water for all the volunteers.

"Anything we can do now to help out with feeding them and in the future. We're a little local Dairy Queen, but a little people here can do a lot to help out," Dairy Queen Owner David Gillespie said.

So as far as victories go for the Panther football team, this one is of championship caliber.

"I'm just glad that we have the opportunity to serve the community, serve the Halsteads and make a difference.  If we just make a difference in one child's life, that is a blessing," Touchdown Club member Margaret McGaughey said.
