Sandy Springs police are searching for a man who they believe shot the mother of his child Sunday afternoon and then fled in her car.
Officers responded to the Chastain Apartments off Roswell Road at about 5 p.m. They found Shawn Crew, 38, in the stairwell of her apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed her to Grady Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Doctors expect that she will survive, despite being shot in the face, police said.
Investigators later secured an arrest warrant for Matthew Terry, 42, of New York. He's wanted on charges of aggravated assault, burglary, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The couple has a four-year-old son together. Officers said they were not sure whether the boy witnessed his father shoot his mother. The boy now is in the care of his mother's relatives.
"We know that the child was in the present area. We don't know if the child witnessed the shooting. It occurred outside the apartment in the stairway area," said Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose.
Officers said Terry has a dark complexion and is 5' 9" and weighs 227 lbs. Terry was last seen in the victim's Mercedes C-280 with a New York license plate with the number FLX-3586.
Police said Terry could also be in a black Cadillac Escalade which also has a New York license plate with the number ETJ-6098.
Police said Terry is considered armed and dangerous. He has connections to North Carolina, too.
The pair's 4-year-old son was at the location when the shooting happened, police said. He was not injured and was turned over to the care of his mother's family.
