Gas leak on Cobb Parkway in Marietta closes travel lanes

Posted: Updated:

Crews in Marietta are responding to another gas leak. This one is at Cobb Parkway and Roswell Street.

As of late Monday, one southbound lane of Cobb Parkway is shut down and all eastbound lanes of Roswell Street were closed.

Earlier Monday, Marietta police reopened Whitlock Avenue near Marietta High School after a construction crew struck and ruptured a gas main.

The incident happened just before 10:30 a.m. and the road was reopened just before noon.

A similar incident happened March 22 in the same area.

"Gas main breaks happen every now and then," said Officer Michael Gardener of the Marietta Police Department. "I can't remember when we've had this many in this short amount of time, but we know how to deal with it."

Marietta Power and Water said in all three gas breaks, contractors were doing work on water lines.

"The contractor would be responsible for any costs to make any repairs to damages to the gas pipe," said Tom Jones, an engineer with the water department.

Jones said the gas lines were properly marked but workers can easily make mistakes.  Residents inconvenienced by the road closures and repairs said that explanation is unacceptable.

"I know that accidents happen, but over and over?" asked Anna Wesley.  "It takes a toll on us here."
