Co-workers share lottery prize with woman who opted out of office pool

Employees at a Florida real estate agency showed unprecedented generosity with their lottery winnings.

All the employees but one pooled their money to buy tickets for last week's Powerball drawing.

Jennifer Maldonado, an office assistant who'd only been on the job a few weeks, opted out of the pool. Co-workers had invited her to join their lottery pool, but Maldonado said money was tight so she declined the invitation to put in $20.

The co-workers matched five out of the six winning numbers and won a million dollars.

"I really thought they were pranking me, because I was the new girl and I was the only one who didn't put into the pool," said Maldonado.

Their million-dollar prize was as real as Maldonado's next surprise.

"We decided to include her and give her some of the money so that she would feel all the excitement, and part of the family, and know how much we cared about her," said co-worker Lauri Finkelstein-Reader.

No one will say how large Maldonado's share is, but no one has heard her complaining.

"Karma is huge. And I think if you do the right thing, the right thing comes to you," said Finkelstein-Reader.
