Adults text while driving more than teens do

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Have you ever been guilty of texting while driving? Turns out almost half of drivers are.

A new survey by AT&T found 49 percent of adult commuters admitted to texting and driving, but only 43 percent of teens did.

Of the adults who admitted to texting and driving, 98 percent said they know it's unsafe. Sixty percent said they didn't text and drive three years ago. Forty percent admit it's a habit.

Texting and driving is illegal in Georgia.

Sending or receiving a text message takes a driver's eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. If you were driving 55 mph, that would be like having your eyes closed while driving for the length of an entire football field.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than nine people are killed by distracted driving every day.
