Charities give away thousands of shoes for March Madness

Posted: Updated:

In the spirit and tradition of giving back to the local community, the NCAA, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Samaritan's Feet and Feed the Hungry teamed up to distribute thousands of shoes to Atlanta's needy.

Karen Fant was one of the first to receive her free shoes.

"I like my shoes and I appreciate them," Fant said.

The idea for this giant shoe give away came from Many Ohomme, a former NCAA college basketball player.

Ohomme was given his first pair of shoes at the age of nine in Nigeria by a missionary.

He told CBS Atlanta Saturday the simple gift of a pair of shoes changed his life and birthed a global organization.

That's why every year he spreads that same shoe love before every final four.

"The final four will come and go," Ohomme said. "We get the chance to change their heart, and our footprint on their heart will live with them forever."

To celebrate 75 years of NCAA March Madness Samaritans Feet gave away 7,500 pairs of shoes to the Atlanta community.
