ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A child was hit and killed on Boulder Park Drive Southwest and Brownlee Road in southwest Atlanta on Monday afternoon.

Atlanta police said when they arrived, they found Patrick Williams, 11, of Riverdale, dead on the sidewalk.

Police said Williams was crossing the street when he was hit. The driver then left the scene.

Alvin Green saw the incident play out.

He told CBS Atlanta Tuesday it was the worst thing he's seen in his life.

"What I'm so upset about is dude didn't even stop. He didn't hit the breaks, he kept going," Green said.

The boy's death has devastated his family.

"He took a big part of me," Kandace Williams, the victim's mother said. "He took my oldest son from me."

Gatha Dyer, 43, later turned himself in to police in Clayton County and was transferred to Atlanta police custody.

Dyer was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license suspended, failure to yield, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving.

Dyer is at the Fulton County Jail.
