SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) -

Police in Sandy Springs say a child was injured Monday after shooting himself in the thumb at Village Creek Trace.

The incident took place at Shaunell Tameka Robinson's home. Robinson is the girlfriend of the child's father, 35-year-old Kevin Kennard.

Robinson and Kennard took the child to Children's Hospital in Sandy Springs, where he was treated and later released.

Officers were contacted by social workers at the hospital and later detectives interviewed the couple.

Investigators found out the child crawled under a bed where Robinson kept a .380 pistol. The child discharged the gun, shooting himself in the thumb.

Robinson and Kennard were home at the time.

Robinson is charged with reckless conduct and she will appear on May 16 in Sandy Springs Municipal Court.
