ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The Syracuse men's basketball team held practice Monday morning at Oglethorpe University.

Coach Jim Boeheim invited the family of Tripp Halstead to come watch the team.

Tripp suffered a brain injury last October when a tree branch fell on him outside his Winder daycare.

Bill Halstead grew up in the Syracuse area and is a lifelong fan of the Orange and their legendary coach.

When CBS Atlanta News told Boeheim about the family's journey, he invited them to the practice to offer some encouragement.

"Just for him to ask me how Tripp was doing that was real nice," said Bill Halstead.

The toddler suffered a major setback earlier this week and was rushed back to the hospital Monday, just days after he was released.

The parents told CBS Atlanta News Tripp will likely need to have his gallbladder removed this week.

"If it helps him, you know, we're looking forward to it. We hate that he has to have another surgery. The reality is it should help him," said Bill Halstead.

CBS Atlanta News talked to Halstead at the practice. He said he was excited about being there.

"It's just real cool to watch the skill level of these guys," said Bill Halstead.

Boeheim is known for his work with children battling health issues through the university and through his own foundation, the Juli and Jim Boeheim Foundation.

"It's great. It's a good feeling to help Tripp's father here," said Boeheim."I can't even imagine what it's like to go through where some freak accident out of the blue gets your son."

Stacy Halstead did not attend. She stayed by Tripp's side at the hospital.

"It was just nice for him to take an interest in us and ant to provide us with a few minutes away from the hospital, a few minutes of normalcy," said Bill Halstead.

The Final Four experience will continue for the Halsteads.

The local charity that's spearheading the renovation of the family's home, Sunshine on a Ranney Day, gave them tickets for one of the games.
