Atlanta police are expecting hundreds of thousands of people to jam the streets of downtown Atlanta this weekend as they attend the Final Four college basketball games and other events.
Besides college hoops, the Atlanta Hawks play Philadelphia Friday night at Philips Arena, the Atlanta Braves have three games this weekend at Turner Field, and Mary Poppins performances are scheduled all weekend at the Fox Theatre.
With so many big events happening at the same time, APD is expecting thousands to descend on the city literally all at the same time.
"We urge them to take MARTA and use public transportation if at all possible," Sgt. Greg Lyons said.
To handle the large crowds, APD canceled officers' vacations and put them on 12-hour shifts.
Brian Gibbons has worked in downtown Atlanta for eight years. He has some advice for visitors.
"Definitely take MARTA, or plan to sit in traffic for a while because it's going to get bad," Gibbons said. "We have a lot of one-way streets as it is, and they'll shut some of them down for moving traffic, so it's going to be pretty brutal to drive."
