Man critical after being shot by officer in SE Atlanta

Posted: Updated:

Gary Griffin said his life passed before his eyes as the car he was in swerved down the road, moments after the driver was shot.

Griffin was a passenger in a car an Atlanta police officer tried to pull over because it matched the description of a vehicle used in some recent robberies.

The driver, who police identify as Will King, pulled into a gas station on Jonesboro Road, near Interstate 285 in southeast Atlanta Thursday afternoon.

"Will wouldn't stop the car," Griffin said. "Will said, 'I got warrants on me and I can't stop the car.'"

Police confirm that King had outstanding warrants for child cruelty and a probation violation on a weapons charge.

The officer walked to the driver's side and what happened next is under investigation.

Griffin said the officer had his gun drawn and banged on the driver's side window with his weapon.

"The officer hit the side of the window with his gun and the third time he hit it. Pow! He's shot," Griffin said.

King, who was struck at least once in the face, pulled off and drove to a nearby apartment complex, where he got out and ran for help.

"Will's face had a big hole in it. He was bleeding real hard," Griffin said.

Police confirm that at some point the officer pulled out his gun and a shot was fired, but they would not say if he intended to shoot or not.

"Real scary man, real scary," Griffin said.

Takiya Coachman, who lives at the apartment complex, told CBS Atlanta that her son played with King as a child.

"It's very upsetting," Coachman said. "It's real sad. That could've been my son, that could've been my child."

Police said King did not have a license and the car he was driving was uninsured.

CBS Atlanta called police to ask if the officer had his gun drawn when he approached the car, to determine the proper procedures and to find out if the officer followed those procedures, but received no response.

King was last reported to be in critical but stable condition. He has outstanding warrants.
