LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

A Gwinnett County police officer and five firefighters were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville for treatment after a deadly hostage standoff.

They had been held as hostages late Wednesday afternoon while answering an emergency medical call at a home in Suwanee.

The hostage taker was eventually shot and killed by S.W.A.T. members.

Two of the firefighters were just evaluated by hospital staff and were quickly released. The other three were leased shortly after.

As for the police officer who was hit by gunfire, CBS Atlanta News was told that he was in good condition, and he, too, will be going home soon.

Early Wednesday evening, Gwinnett County police officers and Gwinnett County firefighters swarmed the emergency department at Gwinnett Medical Center to support their comrades.

It's the closest trauma center to the scene of the hostage standoff.

"We have the trauma surgeons and the nurses to handle traumatic events," said Beth Okun with Gwinnett Medical Center.

Hospital officials won't give specifics but said all of the firefighters and the police officer who was shot are in good condition.

Fire officials told CBS Atlanta News the firefighters received only superficial wounds from the debris of the flash grenade that was used to end the hostage situation.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the firefighters' families also rushed to the hospital.

"Family members are with them, and they are safe. The firefighters are glad to be getting treated, and being able to be released to go home to spend the night with their families," said Rutledge.
