Proposed gun range in northeast Atlanta has some up in arms

Posted: Updated:

A plan to build a new shooting range in Loring Heights in northwest Atlanta has many people asking questions.

"I am disabled, I can't get up and around and I don't want to hear guns popping off. That would be my only concern - the noise range," said Colton Joiner, a local resident.

Stoddard's Range and Guns has plans to convert a 34,000-square-foot facility into a 28,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art shooting range and training facility where metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies and security firms can train. But not everyone is on board with the plan.

"My biggest fear, I suppose, would be the guns because of my children. I probably would not be an advocate of it," said Paula Cibula, who owns a home in the area.

Stoddard's co-owner Michael Halbriech said the facility will attract the highest concentration of law enforcement officers in metro Atlanta. He also said sound proofing will eliminate noise concerns.

"More police? That sounds good to me. I don't know if there is something I don't know, but to me, it sounds like a good thing," said Valarie Duke, who lives in the area.

Still others said they need more time and information before making a decision.

"I'd like to see how it progresses. Right now, I guess I'm indifferent," said Shanna Springfield, who lives in the area.
