CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Detectives are still working to try to piece together what prompted a 30-year-old to take his life Sunday morning along I-575.

According to Holly Springs Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Tanya Smith, just after 7:30 a.m. officers responded to a man armed with a gun at I-575 southbound near Sixes Road.

When officers arrived at the scene they saw James Allen Woods, Jr, 30, dressed in body armor holding a gun to his head.

As precaution, officers shutdown all lanes of I-575 southbound and established a perimeter around the area.

Officers attempted to talk Woods into lowering his weapon and surrender. Unfortunately, he refused and shot himself.
