Local runner encourages others to wear race shirts in support of Boston

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

People are showing their support of Boston on Tuesday by wearing race shirts.

The message from Danny Bourgeois: keep running, keep moving.

Bourgeois was in Boston on Monday and he was in Atlanta during the Olympic bombing in '96.  He doesn't want the act of violence to define this event.

"Don't let the cowards win and just get out and run, move, be engaged," Bourgeois said.

Bourgeios wears his Boston Marathon shirt proudly. He encourages others to wear a race shirt in support of Boston through the weekend.

"It just says you know what it feels like to be part of a race, whether you volunteered, whether you were a spectator, whether you actually ran. It's personal," Bourgeois said.

The Atlantan was in Boston working with the Louisiana Marathon. He took video from the same location of the explosion just an hour before. He left that area shortly before the tragedy unfolded. Watching the coverage from the airport, Bourgeois said it was an all too familiar feeling.

"It was kind of like de ja vu from the Olympics here. I was here in '96 working a hospitality tent. I don't remember hearing an explosion because it was so loud. All of a sudden out of everywhere, out of every shadow came a military person fully packed," Bourgeois said.

He witnessed Atlanta's come back, and is confident the same will happen in Boston.

"I don't want this to bring me down, and say it's a bitter bad world, I want to look back and say we bounced back after the Olympics, we'll bounce back after this," Bourgeois said.

Bourgeois hopes runners will lead the charge, rising to the occasion as they have for decades.

"Runners already raise millions of dollars for charities and now we've got a cause that's a little more self focused now. We're going to run for Boston," Bourgeois said.

Bourgeios plans to run the Boston Marathon next year. He's encouraging people to run this weekend to show support. Click here for a list of upcoming races.
